#245307 You know you're a reef nerd when...

When your tank overflows onto the living room hardwood and rugs and your wife says, "What would have happened if you hadn't caught it and the whole tank emptied?", and your first gut response is "Everything would die" without realizing she is talking about the house and furniture.

Get back to the basics, share more reefkeeping info on the boards good or bad. How many crashes have you had, does your tank have ich how did you get rid of it, how quickly is the coral in your tank growing, etc.

#261081 2015 Board Of Directors Election

Posted by ugluk on 25 November 2014 - 11:10 AM

What is a shame is that nobody truly understands the impact the last BoD had on the club.  If your unhappy now, you would have hated it 3 years ago.

Jesse, Krikor, Sa, Joanne, and I completely changed the direction of the club.  We took it from a group of people on the forums to a group that engaged the public.  We set up an incredible relationship with Center for Aquatic Sciences at Adventure Aquarium (formerly NJAAS), and Ron has taken that program and made it even more stable.

We have 7 donated tanks sitting in a classroom in Coatesville with a full blown learning curriculum created by me.  We need volunteers to make this program work.  When we get them the program is ready to go.

We are also in the planning stages of supporting a 1000 Gallon aquarium at a local children's hospital.  It has been ordered and a deposit placed on it.  We are looking for an install in about 5 months.

All of the above has been done under my direction and work.  Yes Ron and Joe are doing things inside the club, and I am doing my job building programs to make this more than a trading community or social club.

The above are hard facts, they cannot be disputed although some will try.  Ron and Joe are doing what their roles call for them to do, and delivering on my and the former Board's vision for the club.  For this I will not apologize, and will not step aside until the Advisory Board instructs me to do so.

Channel this energy into volunteering.  Instead of bashing and breaking what is already broken, help fix it.

I left off the first half of Joes post because I am not going to argue that Joe is not working hard for the club, IMO he is.  Its the direction the club has taken.  I am all for volunteering, who wouldnt be?  Volunteering is great and putting tanks in hospitals and schools is a good thing, but not at the sake of the club.

Yes, I am unhappy now but I loved it 3 years ago.  We had a community that interacted and helped each other, hell, it was fun.  Now it is just dead.  What is the point of volunteering if only a few people are involved?  I brought this up with Joe a few years ago.  His response was  he was the president so he was going to do what he felt was right and if he did step down who was there to take his place in which he was 100% right.  Now there are people who want to take that role and are even fighting for it which I think is a good thing to see.  I think it is pretty obvious that the majority of members are unhappy about the direction the club has taken not to mention sponsors.  I think change is inevitable or we will perish.

Not that anyone will see this since its not on facebook.  :-)

Oh, and all spelling errors are because I suck at spellign :punk:

#254971 Operation 93 Cube

Posted by mrhighline on 16 April 2014 - 04:25 PM

Well in the spirit of spring and spending money, I bought dan_k's 93 cube Sunday. Plans are to move my livestock from the 75 into it. I'll also be tying it into my frag system via John's old Reeflow Dart. Total system volume tank wise will be about 220 gallons minus whatever the rock and sand displaces. I'm super stoked but terrified all at the same time.

EcaJoe and Bonzd are gonna come up Friday and help with the plumbing and setting up of the cube.

First steps are to transfer the livestock into my 2 tanks in the basement and then break down the 75.

Next step will be to figure out the plumbing and such for the new tank. I'll have to drill the new sump and build a stand for it.  I'd like to have the new tank filled by Sunday but I'm not sure if that will happen or not.

#264551 I'm Back!

Posted by Krikor on 23 June 2015 - 07:39 AM

Hi guys!

I have a tank again!!!

well, i never didnt have a tank, but i finally have one back at home.

my 28 bow with internal/external overflow with a mated pair of clowns and a CBS.

I cant thank my sister enough for taking care of the tank for the last year... i enjoyed not having tank maintenance, but now that its home i'm so psyched! i cant wait to get it back up to snuff (need to fix the overflow i broke the emergency standpipe when i moved it) and get an anenome back...

now i have to get a small 10 gal cube and get my longest living fish (a one eyed PJ cardinal that has defied death 2 times) and set that up for him.

I like the idea of a DVRC store crash, pick a date and everyone shows up. Good for us and our sponsors and could be an opportunity to add more local sponsors

#261029 2015 Board Of Directors Election

Posted by Mstefa1 on 23 November 2014 - 10:41 PM

Joe, speaking strictly objective with no emotion, I've seen you post similar words several times in the past.  So what's going to change this time and why do you feel it will be more effective than what you have been doing the past few years?   It's great to have ideas and plans but execution is so important.  Why has it gotten so bad?

I've had the pleasure of working closely with the board for a number of months in the past but nobody wanted to do anything.  There's been the same topics on the minutes for every meeting.  Great ideas get passed around however nobody wants to do anything.  1 person has a a baby.  Guess what - I have kids too.  Then it's the holidays...  It's the holiday for all of us.  Next it's vacations.  Then it's work traveling.  Then nobody reefs when it gets warm out...  You think we all shut our tanks down in the summer?  You and I had a lot of awesome discussions however did you ever hear from me that I didn't have time for the club?  Frankly speaking I left your team (and I wasn't even a board member) because I was tired of the lack of participation from the board leaders.

Everyone has their personal views on how they want the club to be run but at the end of the day the organization needs to be thriving.  Is it thriving now?  My membership lapse for ~3 weeks and in those 3 weeks there was like 4 new posts.   The lack of interest in the member base is a direct reflection of the lack of interest from the leadership.  It was so bad at one point you called out every member of the board to me on the phone and said you were considering dissolving the organization or merging with a more successful club.

Joe, I'm sure you'll take exception to my post and hit me with another "warning" but the fact remains...  The members want change...  We're tired of empty promises.

#260993 2015 Board Of Directors Election

Posted by GlassMunky on 23 November 2014 - 08:47 AM

With that said, I will try to be the change i want to see, and i will self-nominate myself for the Member at large position.
Alot of members have seen me around or know who i am, and i try to make it to as many meetings/events as i can.
I work for myself so can be rather flexible (as seen by the current BOD when it came down to get the swap done since it was handed to us last minute) and REALLY want to see a positive change in this club. like ACTUALLY implament all the things we have talked about, and not just talk about them.

This club has SUCH POTENTIAL to do GREAT things, and we are wasting it! lets get back on track!
Sometimes i can come off as kind of rough around the edges, but once you get to know me personally, my heart is in the right place and i just  want this to succeed.

#255389 Paypal Dispute. .. Need Advice Pls.

Posted by Zooty on 27 April 2014 - 11:34 AM

Dunno where I really stand on this but the ad was somewhat misrepresented IMO.  When I read it I thought you we're selling a 4.5" frag.  When I saw the picture I thought that was lame, it was barely the size of a quarter, where did the 4.5" come from.  Then I re-read the ad and it said it was 4.5 if all the branches were one linear branch....ummm OK.  But it isn't.

Secondly it's Red plant and I have seen frags similar for around $50-60, retail not from another hobbyist.  Sooooo if it was me, yeah I would have been annoyed if I paid $100+ for that.

I think you may want to re-think the way you advertise or list frags and include a picture with a quarter from the get go.

And yeah, with Paypal you'll be out of luck.  That's why a lot of vendors won't use it.  Even worse if you use the "friend" option instead of business transaction

I'm only saying this since you asked for advice: IMO that's about $30 worth of red planet. Did you describe it correctly and send a pic to match your description, probably. But I can also see why he felt ripped off.

#265331 Dvrc 2015/2016 Member Meeting Schedule

Posted by Coral Reef and Frags on 20 August 2015 - 05:20 PM

From Bonzd67:

Would be awesome if you could do a demo on plumbing one up.  I have an overflow that could be used.

I was going to do this at last January's meeting, but it was cancelled due to terrible road conditions.

My Reply:

This is still in the works but...

The educational part for the meetings at my store will be setting up a brand new system from the ground up ei... Meeting one we will plumb it all together.  Meeting two we will discuss the biological cycle and how/when to add fish.  Meeting 3 will be coral placement.  These are not definite "what we will do each meeting" things.  Just an outline.  Each month that we host a meeting here, we will get further into the development of the system.  Start at the beginning (plumbing, ect) and finish at the end of the year with the advanced stuff.  At the end of the year we will get rid of the tank (not sure how yet) and start a new one for the following year.  This way every year members that are new to the hobby can learn from the ground up!

Again, this is just an outline.  The specifics are still in the works.

#264986 Resignation

Posted by jhutton on 11 August 2015 - 12:15 PM

Joe, I am sorry to hear about the health issues.  It is never easy dealing with this stuff let alone doing so not feeling well.

I know you asked people not to reach out to you to change your mind, however, you need to reconsider your resignation.  As long as you did not offer a formal resignation to the Board, you are still the President of the DVRC.

Right now the club needs a strong leader as President.  This club needs a fighter.

Sure, you were a punching bag the past week, but that's because your Board let you out there alone.  Some of that is my fault, because I always told the Board to let me take the punches when I was the President.  They are just used to staying out of the way.

You need to stay on as President, and have a successful swap.  The swap will be a reset switch for all of this.  I am no longer a paid member, however I do know how to plan as Frag Swap.

I stepped down in the best interest of the club, and now I am stepping up to help right the ship.

I reached out to the Board this morning through email, and have not heard anything back as of yet.

I think the Club detractors agree that it is a mistake to lose you as President.  I think you were the punching bag this week, but only because you were the one who was visible.

This all started with a Club Update Thread.  That was a positive start.  Get back in there, run this club.  Get YOUR Board engaged, and fix this club.  Make it great again.  You have the vision and the talent to do just that.  So do it.  I have never known you to be a quitter.  Don't start now.

#262659 New Ideas For 2015 - Let's Hear Them.

Posted by mkbtank on 04 February 2015 - 05:04 PM

no offense dude, but thats the EXACT SAME THING ive been hearing forever now.....

I get that there is finally new BOD, but honestly after hearing it over and over and over again, i dont believe you guys.....

Its the boy who cried wolf.

What have i gotten out of my membership in the past 3 years????? IMO, not much at all.......

Get things going and prove to the community that things ACTUALLY are changing and maybe people will come back with renewed interests........

But for now, id rather not waste my $20

Now, I don't post much anymore, but still read and am here.

Yep, lots of turmoil. I wish the new board luck. It's a thankless job and I appreciate you guys stepping up.

Glass monkey- I have seen you make consistently negative posts for what seems like years now. Why don't you just go away already since you are obviously unhappy with this forum. Here are some new guys stepping up and trying to take action, and your negative attitude only hurts what they are trying to accomplish. Either volunteer, or give them a chance, but please don't acro all over what they are trying to do.

#262510 Mixing Saltwater

Posted by GlassMunky on 30 January 2015 - 06:12 AM

I've never heard someone put so much thought into mixing saltwater :D

I really can't wait until your setup is up and running. If you are this diligent with saltwater mixing, I can only imagine how phenomenal the tank will be :D

There is such a thing as over-thinking stuff.......
Just saying....
Not everything needs to be complicated lol
